Can this single mom have it all

Without losing her heart?

Just when Tam Rochester’s dreams of expanding her herb shop and being able to support her daughter are finally coming true, Patrick Butler arrives in town. She wasn’t counting on the single dad’s plans for a bakery right across the street or the competition it’ll bring. Tam’s not afraid to fight for her future, but going toe-to-toe with Patrick would be easier if she didn’t adore his kids—and if she could just ignore her growing feelings for the too-talented baker…

My Winning Over the Baker Review:

I love stories that involve baking. I love stories that involve tea shops. With Winning Over the Baker including both, I knew I wanted to read this book by a new-to-me author. But as much as I like stories involving baking and tea shops, the story also has to be a good story with characters I can relate to or enjoy getting to know. Winning Over the Baker provided on both counts.

This story is a quick and enjoyable read. Very Hallmark in its delivery, and I say that in a positive way as I love a good Hallmark movie. It’s straightforward in the plot and you know you’re going to get that wonderful, happily ever after at the end. Though there was an unexpected twist that added a touch of drama to the enemies to more trope. Though I would say less enemies and more competition to more as the characters stood in each other’s way to achieving their livelihood goals and never really disliked each other.

Tam and Patrick are single parents with all the insecurities and parenting pitfalls that can come with that. They’re also both small business owners with overlapping businesses. While this is the avenue used to create tension in the story, it’s also where we get to see their true character as loving and giving people. Add in the kids, two of which are in those precarious junior high years, and the drama is taken up a notch, not only for the girls but for their parents as they navigate the successes and failures of their children.

The spiritual struggles and lessons are present throughout the book in an unobtrusive way even someone without a desire for an inspirational story wouldn’t be put-off by. Handled realistically and without preachiness, these glimpses into the characters’ faith and how they share that with their kids adds to the story.

With two cute shops I’d frequent, main characters I can see myself befriending, and a cast of kids as secondary characters (one being a cute toddler) I’d love to visit this town and enjoy a fresh peach hand pie and a cup of peach tea with Tam and Patrick. I give this story four stars.
