MY NAMES OF GOD: GROWING STRONG REVIEW

I don’t review a lot of nonfiction, but I love studying the names of God. So, this devotional study appealed to me. And I love the cover. It embodies the idea of growth. This book is somewhere between devotional and study, just as it states on the cover. If you want to dive deeper into scripture than the traditional devotional but you’re maybe not looking for an in-depth study, this is perfect. In addition to devotional and real world examples of the names of God at work in our lives, there are added scriptures to study. While the point of each day’s reading is obvious from the devotional aspect, the questions don’t tell you what to think. They allow you to read the scriptures and listen for Holy Spirit’s guidance in what you’ve read. They allow you to think.

But thinking and learning facts isn’t the point. The author gives the examples she does to help readers see how these names, these characteristics of God, are to work in our daily lives. She encourages application of the scriptural truths. Some of the readings spoke to my heart more than others, but those same ones may not be the ones that speak to you. That’s the joy of a devotional study like this. God can speak to each of us at the place where we currently are.

I also love the attention the author pays to cultural and historical perspective. Often, she offers the original word and its meaning. Then, she weaves that in with what it would have meant for those who read it at the time it was first written. I believe this is important for Biblical study, and it is something that is too often left out. If you’re looking for a meaningful devotional study that doesn’t require hours of study for each day (though offers enough scriptures that the motivated person could go deeper), this may be the study for you. I give it five stars.

About the Author

Grace Fox is the author of 16 books including “Names of God: Living Unafraid” which won the Christian Editor’s Choice Award 2025. She’s a popular media guest and Bible teacher at international women’s events, a member of the “First 5” Bible study writing team (Proverbs 31 Ministries), and an annual contributor to the “”Mornings with Jesus”” 365-day devotional published by Guideposts.

Grace has been a career missionary for more than 30 years. She and her husband co-direct International Messengers Canada, a missionary sending agency with 300 staff in more than 30 countries. They recently moved back to shore after living fulltime aboard a sailboat in Vancouver, British Columbia. Married in 1982, they celebrate three grown kids and 15 grandchildren.
